In a recent thread on Dendroworld, there was a claim that replacing orange juice with water reduced the smell of Drosophila cultures. I've been testing this and now I have the results.I can see no difference in the smell of cultures with or without OJ. That is, some cultures smell worse than others, but this doesn't seem to be controlled by juice/water. How wet the culture is seems to be a more important factor. What I do see is that cultures with water rather than OJ produce noticeably fewer flies, so I'm sticking with the original OJ recipe.
